BE A BETTER YOU can’t be overstated. It’s the secret to separating yourself from the pack and will bridge you to goals you have yet to reach more quickly. Personal growth is the greatest separator between those who succeed and those who do not, and its importance can’t be overstated; yet, we undermine our growth by investing in things that numb us to the reality of how short life really is.
The intentional commitment toward personal development is a choice, a noble act. In the heart of any successful business, it’s the number one skillset to help move you forward. A culture where strong character exists sets not only the CONTEXT for your shops, but will benefit employees, families, relationships, and in this age of technology vs human qualities, is more important than ever. It renews the mind and keeps you engaged on a different level. While it’s important to be an expert in ‘how to’make cars run, ‘how to’ make better sales, ‘how to’ hire top performers, and ‘how to’ build a great business model, it’s MORE important to ensure the foundational structure of that shop is healthy. That begins with you. Invest in YOU and watch what follows…profit.

P0420 & P0430 "Keeping The Light Off"
P0420 & P0430 "Keeping The Light Off"
The P0420/P0430 DTCs related to catalytic converter efficiency are among the Top 10 DTCs we deal with on a regular basis. It’s easy to assume by the description that the converter itself has failed – and it just may have – but more often than not there is another culprit hiding in the wings that either caused the death of the converter or the code itself. In this seminar, we’ll share testing methods and tips to help you successfully correct the problem the first time around.
Hybrid & Electric Vehicle Drivetrains
Worldwide, the focus of automotive laws and regulations is on reducing emissions. One way to achieve this goal is increase the number of zero emission vehicles on the road. California has a zero-emissions mandate and China has also adopted a version of California’s plan in its new energy mandate. Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) production numbers are on the rise and are soon going to be commonplace on our streets. It is now time to start learning about BEVs and preparing for this fundamental shift in automotive technology. Variable Camshaft Timing
With a conventional camshaft, all the variables that determine valve timing, lift, duration and overlap are cast in stone the moment the lobes are ground. Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) or otherwise known as Variable Valve Timing (VVT) was then developed in order to achieve better overall versatility in a wider RPM range and various operating conditions by phasing the camshaft. Camshaft phasing systems allow the valve timing to be adapted to the respective operating conditions of the engine. With completion of this class technicians can expect to gain a deeper understanding of:
- Camshaft foundations and the benefits of Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT)
- Design and function of many modern VCT systems
- Operation of various phaser styles
- Special tooling requirements Variable Displacement oil pump technology
- Testing of sensors, actuators and mechanical components of the VCT system
- Scan tool data analysis and waveform diagnostics
Noise, Vibration and Harshness Analysis
Since man began to build machines for industrial use, and especially since motors have been used to power them, problems of vibration reduction and isolation have engaged engineers. Gradually, as vibration isolation and reduction techniques have become an integral part of machine design, the need for accurate measurement and analysis of mechanical vibration has grown. Over the last 15 or 20 years a whole new technology of vibration measurement has been developed which is suitable for investigating modern highly stressed, high speed machinery. Using piezoelectric accelerometers to convert vibratory motion into understandable data, the process of measurement and analysis is efficiently performed by the versatile abilities of these electronics. This class will show you how to use modern techniques to identify the vibration source, track the transfer path and pinpoint the responding component.
Thermal Imaging for Diagnostics
Thermal imaging is fast becoming a rapid, non-intrusive way to gather analytic data quickly. Becoming GREAT on the Phone
Customers decide whether or not they will do business with you in 4.5 seconds. What can you do in 4.5 seconds other than be energetic, enthusiastic and engaging. How we answer the phone and how we engage the customer is essential to our overall success and can mean the difference between a 16% call to appointment rate and a 40% call to appointment rate.
There are many techniques to help us become really great on the phone and convert more potential customers to actual advocates for our business. The best Service Advisors understand this and have learned and practiced these techniques so that they can deliver them without thought and with the appropriate level of enthusiasm and interest. In this class we will training on:
∙ Answering the phone with excitement, enthusiasm and interest
∙ Engaging with the potential client through out
∙ Creating value for potential client and overcoming objections
∙ How to create a buyer from a shopper
∙ Ways to increase your value for the potential client
∙ When to let the tire-kickers go and how to do it
∙ Closing on the phone and getting the Appointment
Recently, I have had the opportunity of listening to hundreds of phone calls. In way too many the Service Advisor was either too eager or not engaged and therefore could not get the potential client excited about making an appointment. In more than half of the calls no one even asked the potential client to make an appointment. And, in many calls the Service Advisor continued to engage after the potential client asked for the appointment, sometimes turning an appointment into a lost opportunity. So, I decided to put together this class to really help students understand what they need to do, give examples of good techniques and bad techniques, and help improve your skills to book more appointments.

Preventing Sales Objections Before They Occur
The dreaded NO! Nobody likes it, nobody wants to hear it, yet without even realizing, we encourage our customers to use it every day. Whether it be a sales presentation that lacks value, a disbelief in the needed services, or merely suggesting the vehicle isn’t even worth the repair, the tiny yet destructive seeds are unwittingly planted over and over that lead to objections and lost sales. Not only do our businesses lose out on revenue and valuable profit, but our customers leave with uncompleted repairs, unreliable vehicles, and a fractured sense of trust. There is however a better way. It’s been said that “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” and this class will outline the small but highly effective ways we can prevent the “NO” from ever arising in the first place.

Starting & Charging System Diagnostics
This clinic is for technicians who have a basic understanding of electrical theory and are ready to put it to use. We begin with highlightinginformation on battery testing and battery replacement. We will discuss proper battery testing methods and what may need to be doneduring a replacement. Starting systems have become more efficient and the circuits to control them include complex security protocols. The methods for validating faults within a starter circuit still revolve around the understanding of basic electricity. Good practices arecritical to not overlooking an obvious fault. We will cover how to diagnosis a ‘no start’ condition and what the quickest way is to pinpointthe problem. Charging system controls have advanced and many manufacturers have specific charging system strategies that are usedto aid in longer battery life and help to increase economy. We discuss the different variations of ‘smart charging systems’ and whattesting methods you need to employ to avoid replacing a costly alternator that was not the root of the problem. After completing this clinic, the student will have the knowledge to:
• Diagnose common battery, starting, and charging issues using the latest diagnostic equipment• Understand the different automotive battery types and testing methods• Measure charging system output and validate proper PCM control• Use system wiring schematics to aid in diagnosing charging system faults
How to Use Your Lab Scope for Diagnostics
In this clinic, we will present how to set up and operate a lab scope for the purpose of testing automotive sensors and componentsof various types. As the saying goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” We cover set up procedures, voltage and time basesettings, and waveform capturing techniques. Waveforms captured from many different component types are reviewed to differentiate‘good’ and ‘bad’ waveforms. A color clinic book is provided showcasing popular aftermarket lab scope waveforms for takehome reference. After completing this clinic, the student will have the knowledge to:
• Set up and capture automotive waveforms using a lab scope• Configure lab scope settings for optimized viewing of waveforms• Properly connect a lab scope to various solenoids, actuators, speed and position sensors and DC motors found under hoodand undercar• Identify when going for the lab scope is necessary• Utilize multiple channels of the lab scope to aid in diagnostic situations
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)
This clinic focuses on educating technicians on the fast growing technical area of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems technologyused on many vehicles. Systems such as blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, collision avoidance, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, side-view cameras and 360° camera use will be discussed. We will highlight calibration methods for these systemswithin the class showcasing real-world procedures pre and post repair. A primary area of focus will be on where to find relevantinformation and what equipment is needed to perform these calibrations. Simply connecting a scan tool and clearing the lights thatare on in the instrument cluster is not the answer, performing proper calibrations are. After completing this seminar, the student will have the knowledge to:
• Understand forward facing camera calibration procedures• Diagnose ADAS system malfunctions related to braking concerns• Test proximity and ultrasonic sensors• Identify resources, information and tools necessary to complete ADAS calibration procedures• Understand forward radar sensor calibration procedures• Analyze related electronic systems that interact with the ADAS system in need of recalibration or adjustment after thealignment procedure

German Cars: Secrets to Success on Diagnosis
This class will cover a variety of topics related to German cars. This will include: Service information resources, scan tools, mechanical tools, Oscilloscopes, and vehicle identification resources. The focus will be primarily on VW/Audi with a mix of some BMW, Mini, Mercedes and Porsche as well. We will also delve into the diagnostic process, and some methods that can be used to be more efficient and accurate. The class will dive into the specifics of how faults are actually determined which will enable every technician to have a better understanding of what is going on behind the scenes inside the control unit. We will draw parallels to non-european vehicles and systems in order to establish that many of the underlying principles are not that different on a fundamental level. The class will NOT be highly focused on case studies (although there will be some), but instead will focus on an approach that can be broadly applied to ALL vehicles successfully. This class will primarily benefit any technician that feels they struggle with diagnosis on German cars.
Stop the Bleeding! Recruit & Retain Awesome Employees During a Workforce Shortage
Since The Great Resignation, there has been a large shortage of workers. The auto repair industry, in particular, is highly affected by the workforce shortage. So what is an independent auto repair shop owner to do? This class will cover ways your business can recruit and retain talented, efficient, and dedicated employees that will help your business grow. Here's what we will cover in this interactive and inspiring 3-hour class: 1) What are the three jobs of your employees? (To reduce your stress, to make you money, and to save you money.) 2) How do you recruit candidates? (Online job listings? Facebook Jobs? Video marketing? Website landing page? Word-of-mouth referrals? Bonus incentives for your staff to recruit their colleagues?) 3) What is your interview process? (Ask everyone what they're currently doing to recruit and interview candidates.) 4) What body language and verbal cues should you look for? (We'll ask three shop owners to play roles with us and discuss our thoughts and ways to improve with the class after each role-play scene.) 5) Discuss the benefits of having an interview questionnaire. 6) What's the best selection process? (Does the boss make the sole decision to hire? Do the other employees vote them in?) 7) What is your onboarding process? (What is their first day like? How do you handle training? Who is mentoring them? What's the ramp-up timeframe before they're fully trained? Do you have SOPs and/or an employee handbook?) 8) Once you have them, how do you keep them? (What is your company culture like? Is it happy? Toxic? Somewhere in between? What can you do to keep the positive energy and good communication flowing? What tools and methodologies could you use to reduce frustration and miscommunication?) 9) How do you monitor and manage their efficiency and profitability? (Is your Owner's Manual / SOP Manual up to date? Do you know if it is printed out or online? Do you know if there are training videos included? What metrics do you measure to monitor employee progress?) 10) How do you maintain a great company culture? (Do you have regularly scheduled meetings? Regular training? Do you share wins, atta-boys, and moments when they're caught being awesome? Do you have peer-to-peer training where each team member shares their expertise on a hot topic? Do you have fun together? What do you do for team building? How do you support each other when someone needs help? How does the team respond when someone is out sick or has a family emergency?
